a longtime obsession
time visualization
a longstanding obsession with different ways to visualize time has led me to design numerous calendars, clocks and watches along the years – be it in print, digital or even mechanical; self-initiated, for clients or licensed to brands.

2020: ebac internship program
the interactive calendar shown above depicts the sun-earth-moon system in realtime and in four key dates – solstices and equinoxes.
it was designed and coded for the year 2020 in a 2019 internship program i offered to design students at ebac, where i used to teach; and was accompanied by this printed calendar, an a2 poster.
the poster presents – in scale! – the earth, the moon, their distance and even the sun (size equal to the large dates circle).
moon phase dates are identified, showing the position of the moon relative to the earth (centre).
interns: tainá fecchio, laissa moreira and pedro fabra.

2018: meca
invited by lucas pexão for a solo exhibition at meca spot, i designed and produced four wall timepieces.
the video above shows the calibration of the most complex of them: ‘sol terra lua’ (sun earth moon).
with 3 independently rotating discs, it shows:
1. the season of the year; indicated by the sun’s position relative to earth’s equator and tropics (the map ring);
2. the moon phase; indicated by the position of the moon relative to the earth (centre) and sun;
3. the time of day around the globe; indicated by the map position relative to the sun.

the gallery above shows the other 3 pieces:
1. ‘day/night’; which turns entirely white ant noon at black at midnight;
2. ‘moon phase’; which shows the current phase of the moon;
3. ‘seasons’; which indicate the seasons on the equator and tropics.
there’s also an image of the clocks in production and a poster calendar i designed to accompany the exhibition.
the poster showed the moon phases, solstices and equinoxes for the following year, 2019.
mechanical engineering was done by ernesto tuneu; programming by andrei thomaz, electronics by pedro setubal, manufacturing by carlos marques and insign, and screen printing by estúdio elástico.

2021: casapark
while working for casapark (more about my work for them here), i suggested a calendar as an end of year gift.
i designed and produced this calendar that worked both as a table or wall piece together with lamp designer mel kawahara.
it also had a digital, slightly interactive version, check it out.

2009: nu
a long part of my calendar journey was while working for design magazine bamboo – every year we designed special editions with dust jackets that doubled as calendars.
but the start of it all was this gift calendar we designed at nu, my first studio.
the first edition was in 2009 and we even sent it to a few design heroes of ours, as massimo vignelli and experimental jetset.
one interesting thing about this design is that although it only uses numbers it is in portuguese, as we refer to week days as 2ª–6ª.
